Analysis

This 9mm semi-automatic pistol offers a solid blend of performance and practicality for shooters seeking a reliable duty or personal defense firearm. Its accuracy is commendable, with tight groupings achievable at moderate ranges due to a well-aligned barrel and sight system. The ergonomics are thoughtfully designed, providing a comfortable grip for a variety of hand sizes, which aids in control during extended sessions. Reliability is a key asset, as it cycles smoothly with most standard ammunition under typical conditions. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome, requiring meticulous attention to detail for proper disassembly and cleaning. Availability of replacement parts may pose challenges, potentially frustrating owners needing repairs. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 5-6 pounds, which suits deliberate shooting, while the felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users with proper technique, though follow-up shots may require adjustment for newer shooters.

Only the last 200 of the production run were made with the long extractor, like the majority of the model 39. However, these 200 were all steel and produced in matt blue. The 539 was produced in a quantity of 8,159 between 1980 - 1983 and of which only 1,975 were produced in nickel finish.
