About the Gun

SD Series striker fired polymer frame pistols evolved from Smith & Wesson's earlier Sigma pistol designs. They are meant to fall between the company’s Sigma and M&P lines, both in terms of features and price. The first generation models came with a Melonite finish slide and a tritium night front sight. The second generation models come with a stainless steel slide and standard combat 3 dot sights. Features include deeply defined front and rear serrations on the slide and an ergonomic grip with textured grip panels.

Analysis

This .40 caliber polymer-framed pistol offers a solid option for shooters seeking a balance of power and control. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at typical self-defense ranges. The ergonomic design, with a textured grip, fits well in various hand sizes, enhancing comfort during extended use. Reliability is a strong point, as it performs consistently under diverse conditions with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome due to the complexity of disassembly for thorough cleaning. Availability of replacement parts may also pose a challenge in some regions, potentially delaying repairs. The trigger pull, averaging around 6.5 pounds, provides a predictable break, though some may find it slightly heavy for rapid follow-up shots. Felt recoil is moderate for the caliber, manageable for most users but possibly sharp for those unaccustomed to the .40 round. Overall, it’s a dependable choice with minor drawbacks.
