About the Gun

The SW9F is a full-size, polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol of conventional double-stack configuration. It uses a black polymer frame with the aggressive texturing typical of the first-generation Sigma and a dark-blued steel slide. There is no accessory rail. The trigger is a long, relatively heavy pre-set striker pull, and the sights are fixed three-dot.

Analysis

Smith & Wesson introduced the SW9F in 1994 as its first polymer-framed pistol, intended to compete directly with the Glock 17 in the emerging striker-fired service and defensive market. The design was developed around the then-new .40 S&W cartridge and offered in 9 mm as a parallel model. Early examples suffered from reliability complaints and a heavy trigger, and the close similarity to the Glock led to a patent-infringement lawsuit that was settled in 1997. Production of the original F-series was brief; the model was quickly superseded by the revised VE series with improved ergonomics and trigger characteristics. Because of the short production window, the SW9F remains one of the less common early Sigma variants.
