About the Gun

The original Model 21 revolver was produced from 1950 to 1966. It did not gain great popularity at the time and only about 1200 were ever made. Smith & Wesson re-introduced this 'N'-frame revolver as part of their 'Classics' series in 2007. This new Model 21 employs a carbon steel frame and cylinder with various finishes. Grip options are the classic checkered grip or a larger modern smooth wood grip. Although a sound design, this second offering of the Model 21 was not a great seller either, and has been discontinued.

Production

Production of this firearm under the Classic Series began in 2007 and continued until 2011. It was part of a limited run to revive iconic designs, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts seeking historical authenticity.

Analysis

This classic revolver in .44 caliber offers a robust platform for shooters seeking a blend of power and precision. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges when paired with quality ammunition. The ergonomics are well-suited for most hand sizes, providing a secure grip that aids in control during firing. Reliability is a key asset, as the design handles regular use with minimal issues when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be demanding, requiring diligent cleaning to prevent wear on critical components. Availability of replacement parts may pose a challenge, often necessitating specialized sourcing. The trigger pull is smooth in double-action mode, though it requires a firm hand to manage the weight. Felt recoil is significant due to the potent cartridge, potentially limiting comfort for less experienced shooters or those sensitive to kick. Overall, it’s a capable choice with considerations for upkeep and user readiness.
