Analysis

The Model 31-1 represented Smith & Wesson's final production iteration of the .32 S&W Long Regulation Police revolver on the J-frame platform, manufactured from 1961 until discontinuation around 1991. Standard barrel lengths included 2", 3", 3.25", and 4" (with occasional 4.25" examples), all pinned and featuring a full underlug on longer barrels. Available in blued or nickel finish, it maintained fixed sights and a six-shot cylinder suited to the low-pressure .32 cartridge. While overshadowed by higher-volume .38 Special J-frames like the Model 36, the 31-1 appealed to users prioritizing reduced recoil, lighter weight, and a slimmer profile for concealed carry or backup use. Its forged construction and reliable double-action trigger contributed to consistent performance with a range of .32 S&W Long ammunition, though modern .32 H&R Magnum loads are not recommended due to frame stress considerations. In the current collector market, examples retain steady interest among S&W small-frame enthusiasts, with condition and original finish driving most value variation.
