About the Gun

The Model 686SSR (Stock Service Revolver) is set up specifically for the stock service revolver (SSR) class in IDPA competition. IDPA does not allow revolvers with more than 6 rounds. The gun comes from the factory with some features that are desirable to many competition shooters, such as chamfered cylinder holes, forged hammer and trigger, and a slightly better trigger pull. The 4" barrel is the maximum length allowed for IDPA, and the slab-siding helps the pistol feel a little more like the 'K'-frames in terms of weight.

Production

Production of this specific revolver with custom features began in 2007 as part of a limited run. It was primarily manufactured through the early 2010s, with availability depending on demand and special orders through select distributors.

Analysis

This .357 Magnum revolver from a well-known manufacturer offers notable strengths for shooters seeking a robust and versatile firearm. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent performance at various ranges, while the ergonomic design of the grip ensures a comfortable hold during extended sessions. Reliability is a key asset, with a proven track record of functioning well under diverse conditions. The trigger pull is smooth in double-action mode, though it may feel slightly heavy for some users, requiring acclimation. Felt recoil is manageable, even with full-power loads, thanks to the balanced weight distribution. On the downside, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, as regular cleaning is essential to preserve the mechanism’s integrity. Parts availability might pose challenges for certain repairs or customizations, and the weight could be a drawback for those prioritizing portability. Overall, it’s a solid choice for many applications.
