About the Gun

After roughly 35 years out of production, the Model 940 returned with refinements addressing practical carry concerns. The Model 940-3 serves as the standard catalog version in the revival, maintaining the core concealed-hammer J-frame platform while incorporating night sights along with Hogue OverMolded Rubber Bantam grips. These grips feature finger grooves and a Cobblestone texture to improve control and recoil management during live fire, providing a practical update for everyday carry without unnecessary additions.

Analysis

The Smith & Wesson Model 940 series provides revolver shooters with a compact 9mm option using moon clips for reliable function with the rimless cartridge, allowing use of the same ammunition common in many carry pistols. The original filled a specific need in the 1990s for a small stainless wheelgun in 9mm when that round was rising in popularity for defense. The newer variants, arriving after a 35-year absence, incorporate practical changes like upgraded low-profile sights for better acquisition in varied lighting and modern grips for firmer control under the sharper recoil of 9mm compared to .38 Special. All versions use all-stainless construction for corrosion resistance and added mass to tame felt recoil in a lightweight package, while the concealed hammer ensures a smooth, snag-free draw. The five-shot capacity and double-action-only trigger align with close-quarters defensive use rather than prolonged shooting or precision work, reflecting the enduring role of J-frame revolvers in concealed carry where simplicity and reliability in adverse conditions take priority over higher round counts.
