About the Gun

The Sphinx 2000 series is based on the Czech CZ-75 pistol. Improvements to the CZ design include a firing pin safety and slightly different barrel/slide locking system. Sphinx pistols are made in a wide variety of models and modifications, suitable for self-defense, police duty, and practical shooting under IPSC and IDPA rules. The Sphinx 2000 is a short recoil operated, locked breech pistol. The barrel is operated using a Browning cam system, and is locked to the slide by single lug via a large ejection port. Most 2000 models feature a Double Action (DA/SA) trigger with external hammer.

Production

Production of this competition model began in 1999 and continued until 2011. It was crafted during a period when precision and quality were paramount for competitive shooting designs, reflecting the era's demand for reliable performance.

Analysis

This 9mm semi-automatic pistol offers a solid performance for both novice and experienced shooters. Its accuracy is commendable, with tight groupings achievable at moderate ranges, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. The ergonomics are a strong point, with a grip that accommodates various hand sizes, promoting a secure hold during extended sessions. Reliability is consistent under standard conditions, with minimal malfunctions during testing, even after high round counts. However, maintenance can be cumbersome, as disassembly requires more effort than some competing designs, potentially frustrating users. Parts availability may also pose a challenge, especially for those outside major markets. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 5 pounds in single-action mode, which aids precision. Felt recoil is moderate for the caliber, manageable for most shooters, though those sensitive to kick might notice it during rapid fire. Overall, it’s a capable choice with some practical limitations.
