About the Gun

The Sphinx 2000 series is based on the Czech CZ-75 pistol. Improvements to the CZ design include a firing pin safety and slightly different barrel/slide locking system. Sphinx pistols are made in a wide variety of models and modifications, suitable for self-defense, police duty, and practical shooting under IPSC and IDPA rules. The Sphinx 2000 is a short recoil operated, locked breech pistol. The barrel is operated using a Browning cam system, and is locked to the slide by single lug via a large ejection port. Most 2000 models feature a Double Action (DA/SA) trigger with external hammer.

Analysis

This .40 S&W pistol offers a solid performance for shooters seeking a reliable duty or personal defense firearm. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. The ergonomics are thoughtfully crafted, with a grip that accommodates a variety of hand sizes, ensuring comfort during extended use. Reliability is a key asset, as it functions smoothly under diverse conditions with minimal malfunctions. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome, requiring more effort to disassemble and clean compared to other models in its class. Parts availability may also pose a challenge, as replacements are not as widely accessible. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 5.5 pounds, which aids in precision shooting. Felt recoil is noticeable but manageable for most users, aligning with expectations for this caliber. Overall, it’s a capable choice with minor drawbacks to consider.
