About the Gun

The Croatian made XD pistol represents Springfield Armory's entry into the polymer-frame striker-fired pistol market. Although Springfield Armory introduced the XD in 2002, an earlier incarnation of the design known as the HS2000 had been independently imported into the US three years before. The XD model introduced many manufacturing improvements that have given the pistol a reputation for reliability and accuracy. While often compared to the GLock, the XD has a distinctly different trigger action that includes a unique 1911-style grip safety, and both a cocked status indicator and a loaded chamber indicator.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 2006, with the earthtone color frame variant introduced around 2008. Manufacturing continued for several years, though specific end dates may vary based on market demand and production runs.

Analysis

This compact .45 Auto pistol offers a solid balance of performance and concealability, making it a viable option for both personal defense and everyday carry. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, while the ergonomic grip design accommodates a variety of hand sizes, enhancing control during firing. Reliability is a key asset, with the firearm functioning well under diverse conditions and with various ammunition types. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 5.5 to 7 pounds, providing a predictable break for most shooters. However, felt recoil can be noticeable, particularly for those unaccustomed to the .45 caliber in a smaller frame, potentially affecting follow-up shots. On the downside, maintenance can be somewhat intricate due to the complexity of disassembly, and sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges in certain regions, limiting long-term support for some users.
