About the Gun

The P99 was developed for law enforcement, security forces and the civilian shooting market as a replacement for the Walther P5 and the P88. It is a striker-fired pistol with a polymer frame and 'Tenifer' treated steel slide. The polymer grip has interchangeable palmswells. The P99 striker-fired action is unique in that operates in a double-action (DA/SA) mode similar to that of hammer-fired pistols. The P99 QA variant is a striker single-action (SA) trigger similar to the Glock. The P99 DAO variant employs a classic double-action only long trigger pull. Also unique to the P99 is a decocking button recessed into the top of the slide, rather than a conventional lever usually found on the side. Other features include an integrated accessory rail and both a loaded chamber and a cocked status indicator.

Analysis

This 9mm semi-automatic pistol offers a compelling package for shooters seeking a reliable duty or personal defense firearm. Its accuracy is noteworthy, delivering consistent performance at typical engagement distances, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. Ergonomically, the grip adapts to various hand sizes with interchangeable backstraps, ensuring a comfortable and secure hold. Reliability is a key strength, with the pistol functioning effectively across a wide range of ammunition types and conditions. The trigger pull, available in both double and single-action modes, is smooth with a predictable break, though some may find the reset slightly long. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users during extended sessions. On the downside, maintenance can be somewhat intricate, requiring attention to detail for proper care. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges in certain regions, potentially frustrating owners needing quick repairs.

P99 AS round count
By roninhyde on 24 Jan 2019
At some point the P99 magazine carried 16 rounds, but I believe it was found the 15 round magazines were far more reliable. The vast majority of these pistols use 15 round magazines.
