About the Gun

The P99 was developed for law enforcement, security forces and the civilian shooting market as a replacement for the Walther P5 and the P88. It is a striker-fired pistol with a polymer frame and 'Tenifer' treated steel slide. The polymer grip has interchangeable palmswells. The P99 striker-fired action is unique in that operates in a double-action (DA/SA) mode similar to that of hammer-fired pistols. The P99 QA variant is a striker single-action (SA) trigger similar to the Glock. The P99 DAO variant employs a classic double-action only long trigger pull. Also unique to the P99 is a decocking button recessed into the top of the slide, rather than a conventional lever usually found on the side. Other features include an integrated accessory rail and both a loaded chamber and a cocked status indicator.

Production

This firearm was part of the initial production run, manufactured between 1997 and 1999. These early models were produced in limited quantities before design updates were introduced in subsequent generations, marking the beginning of its legacy in the late 1990s.

Analysis

This .40 S&W semi-automatic pistol offers a compelling package for shooters seeking a duty-grade firearm. Its accuracy is commendable, with a well-designed barrel and sight system that aids in consistent shot placement. Ergonomically, the grip is adjustable to fit various hand sizes, enhancing comfort and control during extended use. Reliability is a strong point, as it performs consistently under diverse conditions with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat intricate, requiring attention to detail for disassembly and cleaning. Availability of replacement parts may also pose challenges in certain regions, potentially delaying repairs. The trigger pull is smooth with a distinct reset, though some users might find it slightly heavier than preferred for rapid follow-up shots. Felt recoil in this caliber is noticeable but manageable, especially for experienced shooters, making it a viable choice for both defensive and range applications.
