About the Gun

The P99 was developed for law enforcement, security forces and the civilian shooting market as a replacement for the Walther P5 and the P88. It is a striker-fired pistol with a polymer frame and 'Tenifer' treated steel slide. The polymer grip has interchangeable palmswells. The P99 striker-fired action is unique in that operates in a double-action (DA/SA) mode similar to that of hammer-fired pistols. The P99 QA variant is a striker single-action (SA) trigger similar to the Glock. The P99 DAO variant employs a classic double-action only long trigger pull. Also unique to the P99 is a decocking button recessed into the top of the slide, rather than a conventional lever usually found on the side. Other features include an integrated accessory rail and both a loaded chamber and a cocked status indicator.

Production

Production of this compact firearm with an anti-stress trigger began in 2004 and continued until it was discontinued in 2021. It was manufactured during this period, catering to users seeking a reliable, shorter-barreled option in its class.

Analysis

This compact .40 S&W pistol offers a solid blend of performance and practicality for both concealed carry and range use. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate distances thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. The ergonomics are a key asset, with a grip that accommodates various hand sizes through interchangeable backstraps, enhancing control during firing. Reliability is another strength, as it cycles smoothly with a wide range of ammunition under typical conditions. The trigger pull is crisp in single-action mode, averaging around 4.5 pounds, though the double-action pull feels heavier at roughly 9 pounds, which may require adjustment for some shooters. Felt recoil is manageable but noticeable due to the potent caliber in a smaller frame. On the downside, maintenance can be somewhat intricate, requiring attention to detail, and sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges in certain regions.
