About the Gun

The P99 was developed for law enforcement, security forces and the civilian shooting market as a replacement for the Walther P5 and the P88. It is a striker-fired pistol with a polymer frame and 'Tenifer' treated steel slide. The polymer grip has interchangeable palmswells. The P99 striker-fired action is unique in that operates in a double-action (DA/SA) mode similar to that of hammer-fired pistols. The P99 QA variant is a striker single-action (SA) trigger similar to the Glock. The P99 DAO variant employs a classic double-action only long trigger pull. Also unique to the P99 is a decocking button recessed into the top of the slide, rather than a conventional lever usually found on the side. Other features include an integrated accessory rail and both a loaded chamber and a cocked status indicator.

Analysis

This compact 9mm pistol offers a solid blend of performance and practicality for both novice and experienced shooters. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. Ergonomically, the grip adapts well to various hand sizes with customizable backstraps, ensuring a secure hold during use. Reliability is a strong suit, with the firearm functioning smoothly under diverse conditions and with different ammunition types. The trigger pull, averaging around 5 pounds in quick-action mode, provides a crisp and predictable break, aiding in shot control. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users, even during extended sessions. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome due to intricate disassembly procedures, which may frustrate less experienced owners. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts can be challenging in some regions, potentially delaying repairs. Overall, it’s a capable choice with minor drawbacks to consider.
