Analysis

American Derringer introduced the Model 4 in 1985 as a longer stainless over/under variant on the Model 1 lockwork: top-break barrels, automatic barrel selection, and a hammer-block safety that drops off when the hammer is cocked. Catalogs listed .357 Mag, .357 Rem Max, .44 Rem Mag, .45 Auto, .45 Colt, .45 Colt / .410, and both-barrel .45-70. The extra barrel length was the point of the model—more velocity and a longer sight line than the 3-inch Model 1, short of the 6-inch Model 6. Used Model 4 guns are less common than a Model 1 and usually bring a modest premium.
