Established in 1980 in Waco, Texas, by Robert A. Saunders, the company focused on premium stainless-steel derringers based on the Remington Double Derringer design. They offered models in a wide range of calibers, including the Model 1 series, double-action variants like the DA38, and a revival of the Semmerling pistol. Elizabeth Saunders joined in 1986, launched the Lady Derringer line, and assumed ownership after Robert's death in 1993. The company experienced growth in the 1980s and 1990s but has operated in a dormant state for over a decade. As of 2026, the official website remains a static archive from the early 2000s with no functional e-commerce or recent updates. The physical Derringer Store in Waco appears closed or inactive, with no evidence of ongoing production. New firearms are unavailable directly from the factory. The secondary market provides the primary source for American Derringer products, primarily through auctions and used sales. Bond Arms has largely taken over the modern derringer segment with active manufacturing.
