Analysis

Beretta developed the PX4 Storm in the early 2000s as a polymer-frame companion to the Cx4 carbine and as the production successor to the steel-frame 8000 Cougar. The rotating-barrel lock was brough over from the Cougar design. The interchangeable Type F, G, C, and D trigger modules followed the 92 pattern so an agency could specify a slide-mounted safety/decock lever, a decocker-only lever, a spurless DAO hammer, or a lighter constant-action trigger without changing the rest of the pistol. The design was laid out first around .40 S&W and then offered in 9 mm. A slightly enlarged .45 Auto frame followed after prototype display at the 2006 SHOT Show, with regular shipments in 2008. U.S. commercial guns arrived in late 2004. Full-size production stayed in Italy. Maryland State Police adopted the Type D in .40 S&W in 2008 to replace the 96D, then dropped the pistol in 2012 after magazine-drop and floorplate failures in training. Other U.S. departments, including Providence, Rhode Island, and Fresno, California, issued the platform. Larger overseas lots included South African Police Service Type F pistols and Argentine and Italian police purchases. Type F and Type G became the usual commercial configurations. Type C and Type D were aimed at agencies and appear less often on the used civilian market. Aftermarket support stayed narrower than for Glock-pattern pistols. In the 2010s and 2020s Beretta worked with Langdon Tactical on factory PX4 packs that reused this lockwork rather than replacing the full-size gun. Used examples are common.
