About the Gun

Features an exposed hammer, serrated slide, toggle safety/retracted slide lock combo, magazine safety, with magazine release button on the bottom of the left grip panel. Developed by Astra Firearms of Spain in 1954 as the Astra model Cub. These guns were imported into the US starting in 1958 as the Colt model Junior. The passage of the 1968 Gun Control Act, made import of weapons this size illegal and Colt was forced to cease importation of the Junior. In 1970 Colt got around this law by contracting with FIE to import the individual parts from Astra and assemble them in the US for Colt. This arrangement lasted through 1972 when Colt ceased marketing the Junior. FIE continued to make these guns as the FIE model A27, or "The Best" until 1988.

Production

Production of this specific model with its unique features occurred between 1957 and 1975. It was manufactured during a period when such designs were popular for compact, lightweight firearms, catering to a niche market of enthusiasts.

Analysis

This compact .22 Short caliber pistol offers a blend of precision and user-friendly design that appeals to both novice and experienced shooters. Its accuracy is commendable for a firearm of this size, making it a solid choice for target practice or plinking. The ergonomics are well-suited for smaller hands, with a grip that facilitates a natural hold. Reliability is generally consistent when maintained properly, though it can be sensitive to ammunition quality. On the downside, maintenance requires attention to detail, as certain components are prone to wear if not cleaned regularly. Parts availability may also pose a challenge for repairs. The trigger pull is smooth, averaging around 4-5 pounds, which aids in control during firing. Felt recoil is minimal, as expected in this caliber, ensuring comfort over extended sessions. Overall, it’s a practical option with some considerations for long-term care.
