About the Gun

Features an exposed hammer, serrated slide, toggle safety/retracted slide lock combo, magazine safety, with magazine release button on the bottom of the left grip panel. Developed by Astra Firearms of Spain in 1954 as the Astra model Cub. These guns were imported into the US starting in 1958 as the Colt model Junior. The passage of the 1968 Gun Control Act, made import of weapons this size illegal and Colt was forced to cease importation of the Junior. In 1970 Colt got around this law by contracting with FIE to import the individual parts from Astra and assemble them in the US for Colt. This arrangement lasted through 1972 when Colt ceased marketing the Junior. FIE continued to make these guns as the FIE model A27, or "The Best" until 1988.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1957 and continued until 1973. Initially manufactured in the United States, production later shifted to Spain under a licensing agreement, maintaining consistent design and quality throughout its run.

Analysis

This compact .25 Auto pistol offers a blend of practicality and historical appeal for enthusiasts of small-caliber handguns. Its lightweight design and slim profile make it highly concealable, ideal for discreet carry or as a backup firearm. Accuracy is commendable for its class, providing consistent performance at close ranges typical of its intended use. The ergonomics suit smaller hands well, though larger-handed shooters may find the grip somewhat cramped. Reliability is generally solid with proper ammunition selection, though it can be finicky with lower-quality rounds. The trigger pull is crisp but on the heavier side, which may affect precision for some users. Felt recoil is minimal, as expected from the low-powered cartridge. On the downside, maintenance can be tedious due to the intricate design, and sourcing replacement parts poses a challenge given its age. Overall, it’s a niche piece with distinct advantages and limitations.
