About the Gun

The original SIG P220 is the full-size model introduced in 1975 as the Swiss Pistole 75. It was developed through the SIG-Sauer partnership in Germany and initially produced with a heel-mounted magazine release positioned at the base of the grip frame, along with a lanyard loop on early examples. These pistols were manufactured with a stamped slide assembly and later imported to the United States, including under the Browning BDA branding.

Production

Production of this specific model with a two-tone finish began in 2012 and continued until 2015. It was crafted during this period to meet the demand for precision and performance, reflecting a limited but notable manufacturing run.

Analysis

This .45 Auto pistol demonstrates notable precision, thanks to its match-grade barrel and finely tuned sights, making it a strong choice for competitive shooting or precise target work. The ergonomic design of the grip offers a comfortable and secure hold, accommodating a wide range of hand sizes with ease. Reliability is a key asset, as it consistently performs under varied conditions with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring regular attention to ensure optimal function, which may deter casual users. Availability of replacement parts can also pose a challenge, potentially leading to delays in repairs. The trigger pull is smooth and crisp, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single-action mode, which aids in accuracy. Felt recoil is moderate for its caliber, manageable for experienced shooters but possibly stout for those less accustomed to larger handguns.
