About the Gun

The Smith & Wesson Model 14-5 was reintroduced in 1991 to address persistent demands from law enforcement Practical Pistol Competition (PPC) shooters for a dedicated, accurate .38 Special target revolver, offering a lighter alternative to bulkier .357 Magnum L-frames. Its full underlug barrel enhanced stability and balance for competitive use in PPC, NRA Action Revolver events, and European matches, with an initial limited production run of approximately 3,000 units as a special edition.

Analysis

This classic double-action revolver in .38 Special +P caliber offers a blend of precision and traditional design that appeals to many shooters. Its accuracy is noteworthy, particularly with a 6-inch barrel that aids in stabilizing shots over moderate distances. The ergonomics are well-suited for most hand sizes, with a grip that facilitates a firm hold during extended range sessions. Reliability is a key asset, as the mechanism consistently performs under varied conditions with proper care. However, maintenance can be demanding, requiring regular attention to prevent wear on older components. Parts availability may pose challenges, as some replacements are less common in today’s market. The trigger pull is smooth in double-action mode, though it may feel heavy for newer shooters. Felt recoil is manageable, even with +P loads, making it a practical choice for both practice and defensive use.

Very glad this was added from my suggestion...buttery smooth trigger and very accurate. Handles well with +P. Might cost some $$$ to find one, but well worth it.
