About the Gun

The Model 625 is a six shot double action revolver chambered for the .45 Auto cartridge. Based on an 'N'-frame, the Model 625 was introduced as the .45 CAL MODEL OF 1988, in 1988. The 625 will headspace the .45 Auto cartridge in the chambers without use of moon clips, but since the extractor star cannot engage the rimless cartridge, moon clips are needed to facilitate ejection.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1989, with various models manufactured through the early 2000s. Specific variants with unique features were produced in limited runs, particularly between 1989 and 1992, before broader production resumed in later years.

Analysis

This .45 Auto caliber revolver demonstrates notable precision, thanks to its well-balanced design and quality barrel construction. The ergonomics are commendable, with a grip that accommodates a wide range of hand sizes, ensuring a secure hold during use. Reliability is a key asset, as it consistently performs under various conditions with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring regular attention to keep it in optimal condition. Parts availability may pose a challenge for some users, as sourcing replacements can be less straightforward compared to more common platforms. The trigger pull is smooth and crisp, averaging around 4-5 pounds in double-action mode, which aids in control. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most shooters, though those sensitive to .45 Auto’s kick might find it slightly pronounced during extended sessions. Overall, it’s a solid choice with considerations for upkeep.

My pre-lock 625-4 doesn’t have the capacity of my 1911, but it’s more fun to shoot. The N-frame has enough heft to tame +P recoil, but I added an X-frame recoil absorbing grip to standardize it with my other S&W revolvers. Very accurate on paper out to 25 yds (indoor limit). The trigger is smooth and predictable both DA and SA. Sights are fine. Both 45ACP (with moon clips) and 45AR function flawlessly. Note: Firing pin on hammer with this ‘95 production version.
