Analysis

This classic double-action revolver in .38 Special +P offers a solid blend of performance and simplicity for shooters seeking a dependable defensive or range tool. Its accuracy is commendable, with a fixed sight system that aligns well for consistent shot placement at moderate distances. The ergonomic design of the grip provides a natural hold, enhancing control during firing. Reliability is a key asset, as the robust construction ensures consistent function even under regular use. However, maintenance can be more involved due to the intricacies of the internal mechanism, and sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges for some owners. The trigger pull, while smooth in double-action mode, can feel somewhat heavy for newer shooters, requiring practice to master. Felt recoil is moderate with standard loads, though +P ammunition can increase perceived kick, potentially affecting follow-up shots for less experienced users.

Excellent choice for over 40 years... 2" S&W 64-2
By EEResQ on 09 Dec 2022
I've owned and periodically CC'd a factory bobbed 2" S&W 64-2 DAO since 1981. It's one of the most accurate snubies I own. For the first 30 years, it was loaded with Winchester - Western .38 Special +P LSWC-HP 158 grain (the old FBI load). Around 2011, started evaluating the new .38 Special +P ammo designed for 'Short Barrel Revolvers'. In 2012 settled on Speer 'Gold Dot' Duty Ammo, .38 Special +P 135 grain JHP, 'For Short Barrel Revolvers' (53921). This ammo and the 2" S&W 64-2 DAO makes for a great EDC. "Beware the confident old man who regularly carries a snubnose .38... You can bet he knows where and how to effectively deliver its load." Author, MHB
