About the Gun

This heat-treated scanium alloy N-frame revolver is Smith & Wesson’s answer to the Taurus Judge. It’s 6-shot capacity gives it one round more than the Judge. The gun can be loaded with .410 2-1/2 inch shotshells, .45 Auto or .45 Colt cartridges, alone or in combination with the use of included moon clips for the .45 Auto rounds. Although the same model fires both .45 Colt rounds and .45 Auto rounds, the gun is listed in the database twice to get separate rankings based on each cartridge. At this point in time we are not providing ranking on guns that fire .410 shotshells.

Analysis

This .45 Auto caliber revolver offers a unique blend of versatility and performance for shooters seeking a reliable wheelgun in a powerful cartridge. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, while the ergonomic grip design ensures a comfortable hold during extended sessions. Reliability is a strong point, with smooth operation across various ammunition types, making it suitable for both defensive and range use. The trigger pull is crisp, with a predictable break in single-action mode, though double-action requires noticeable effort. Felt recoil is manageable for experienced users but may challenge newer shooters due to the potent round and lighter frame. On the downside, maintenance can be more involved compared to simpler designs, and sourcing specific replacement parts might pose difficulties. Overall, it’s a capable choice, though its heft and recoil demand familiarity with larger calibers.
