About the Gun

While developed in 1929, the post Second World War production ban resulted in Walther issuing a manufacturing license for the PP to the French company Manurhin in 1949. US imports of the PP began in 1963 which were French made until 1986, when Walther resumed its own manufacturing. The PP (which stands for Polizei Pistole) is a compact double-action (DA/SA)hammer-fired semi-automatic pistol that has been used by police forces throughout the world.

Production

Production of this firearm occurred between 1929 and 1945, during the pre-war and wartime periods in Germany. Manufacturing primarily took place at the Zella-Mehlis factory before the end of World War II.

Analysis

This classic semi-automatic pistol in .380 Auto caliber offers a blend of historical design and practical functionality. Its accuracy is commendable for a compact firearm, delivering consistent performance at moderate ranges. The ergonomic grip fits well in most hands, providing a secure hold during firing. Reliability is a strong point, with a proven track record of functioning under varied conditions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, as the design requires regular attention to prevent wear on aging components. Availability of replacement parts may pose a challenge, particularly for less common repairs. The trigger pull is crisp but on the heavier side, which might not suit all shooters, especially those preferring lighter mechanisms. Felt recoil is moderate for the caliber, manageable for most users with practice, though it can feel sharp during extended sessions. Overall, it’s a solid choice with considerations for upkeep.
