About the Gun

In an effort to fulfill the need for 1911 pistols during World War II unconventional companies were contracted to produce the handguns. Union Switch & Signal was one of those countries. The company primarily made railroad signaling equipment but received a contract in 1942 to produce 200,000 1911's. Only 55,000 U.S.&S. pistols ended up being produced, making them the second rarest of the WWII era M1911A1 pistols.

Production

Production of this military firearm occurred between 1942 and 1943 under a wartime contract with Union Switch & Signal, a lesser-known manufacturer during World War II, contributing to the war effort with a limited run of these iconic handguns.

Analysis

This iconic .45 Auto military pistol, widely recognized for its historical significance, offers several notable strengths that appeal to shooters. Its accuracy is commendable, providing consistent performance on target with proper handling. The ergonomics are well-suited for many users, with a grip design that facilitates a natural hold and control during firing. Reliability is a key asset, as the design has proven itself in diverse conditions over decades. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring regular attention to ensure optimal function. Parts availability may pose challenges for older variants, and the weight might not suit all shooters, particularly those preferring lighter options. The trigger pull is generally crisp, averaging around 5-6 pounds, which aids precision but may feel heavy for some. Felt recoil is noticeable due to the potent caliber, though manageable with experience, making it a solid choice for dedicated users.
