In an effort to fulfill the need for 1911 pistols during World War II unconventional companies were contracted to produce the handguns. Union Switch & Signal was one of those countries. The company primarily made railroad signaling equipment but received a contract in 1942 to produce 200,000 1911's. Only 55,000 U.S.&S. pistols ended up being produced, making them the second rarest of the WWII era M1911A1 pistols.
