About the Gun

The Glock 21 is a full-size, polymer-framed pistol chambered in .45 ACP, utilizing the large-frame platform to support high-capacity magazines and reliable handling of the cartridge for duty, self-defense, or recreational purposes. It employs a locked-breech, short-recoil operating system with a polygonal rifled barrel and double-stack magazines holding 13 rounds standard. Pre-Gen4 versions were produced in Gen2 and Gen3 configurations, with the Gen3 including an accessory rail on the dust cover and ergonomic grip modifications. A short-frame (SF) variant was offered within the Gen3 production to provide a reduced grip circumference and trigger reach for users with smaller hands, while maintaining the same slide, barrel, and overall external dimensions as the standard frame.

Production

Production began around 1998 and continued into the early 2010s.

Analysis

These pre-Gen4 Glock 21 variants share the same fundamental mechanics and have shown consistent durability across law enforcement, military, and civilian applications worldwide. Major components remain highly compatible between Gen2 and Gen3 versions (including the SF variant), allowing extensive parts interchangeability with only minor variations in grip texture and frame features. The polygonal rifling supports reliable function with a range of ammunition types and contributes to consistent practical accuracy at typical distances. Gen2 examples feature checkered front and back straps with pebble-texture side panels, no accessory rail, and no finger grooves or thumb rests, and they appear less frequently, often appealing to those preferring the original simpler grip design. Gen3 models incorporate finger grooves on the front strap, thumb rests on the frame sides, a revised grip texture, and the accessory rail for mounting devices; the SF variant within this generation reduces the backstrap-to-trigger distance and overall grip circumference for improved ergonomics on smaller hands without changing major dimensions or requiring different magazines in most cases. The platform maintains broad compatibility with corresponding G20 components, facilitating access to magazines, holsters, recoil parts, and other accessories, while the .45 ACP chambering and frame mass contribute to manageable recoil with standard-pressure loads. Secondary market preferences are driven primarily by condition, originality, and individual grip fit rather than any inherent differences in mechanical performance or durability across the generations.

This gun performs. I really like this pistol. I like every Glock I’ve fired, but do not currently own one. This length is great for the 45ACP and tames recoil.
